AI Governance Frameworks for Enterprise Teams
Every engineering team I know is using AI tools. GitHub Copilot for code completion. ChatGPT for debugging. Claude 3.5 for documentation. The adoption is grassroots and largely ungoverned. As a program manager responsible for enterprise delivery, that keeps me up at night.
Why Governance Matters Now
Ungoverned AI usage creates three categories of risk. Intellectual property risk: engineers pasting proprietary code into public AI tools. Quality risk: AI-generated code that passes review but contains subtle bugs or security vulnerabilities. Compliance risk: AI outputs that violate data handling policies or regulatory requirements.
Most organizations are handling this with a vague "use AI responsibly" policy. That is not governance. That is a hope strategy.
A Practical Framework
I have been developing a governance framework for my programs that covers four areas.
Approved tools: which AI tools are sanctioned for use and at what classification level. We use a tiered system. Tier 1 tools (like GitHub Copilot Enterprise) are approved for all code. Tier 2 tools (like Claude 3.5 via API) are approved for non-sensitive contexts. Tier 3 tools (public chatbots) are prohibited for proprietary content.
Usage guidelines: what types of content can be shared with AI tools. We never share client credentials, production data, or personally identifiable information with any AI tool. This sounds obvious, but without explicit guidelines, people make judgment calls that create risk.
Quality gates: additional review requirements for AI-generated artifacts. Code generated with AI assistance gets the same review as human-written code, plus a specific check for common AI failure modes — incorrect error handling, missing edge cases, and hallucinated API endpoints.
Audit trail: documenting where and how AI was used in the delivery process. Not for surveillance — for accountability and continuous improvement.
Starting Small
You do not need a comprehensive policy on day one. Start with approved tools and usage guidelines. Add quality gates as you learn what fails. Build the audit trail over time. The goal is progress, not perfection.
The organizations that get AI governance right will move faster than those that either ban AI or ignore the risks. Governance is not a brake. It is a steering wheel.
