IAPP AIGP Preparation — What to Expect

13 February 20262 min read

The IAPP Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional certification has been on my radar since it launched. As someone who sits at the intersection of program delivery and AI governance, this credential fills a gap that no other certification addresses.

What the AIGP Covers

The exam spans several domains that directly map to my daily work. AI governance frameworks and regulations, including the EU AI Act and emerging national legislation. Risk management for AI systems, covering the full lifecycle from development through deployment and decommissioning. Data governance specific to AI, including training data requirements and privacy implications. Ethical considerations in AI deployment, moving beyond theoretical frameworks into practical implementation.

Why I Am Pursuing It

My career trajectory is clear: I am building expertise at the intersection of program management, AI systems, and governance frameworks. I already hold my Six Sigma Black Belt and am preparing for the ISO 42001 Lead Auditor certification. The AIGP adds the privacy and regulatory dimension that rounds out this expertise.

More practically, every enterprise client I work with is asking about AI governance. They want program managers who can speak authoritatively about compliance, not just delivery. The AIGP provides the credential and the knowledge framework to do exactly that.

My Study Approach

I am working through the IAPP's body of knowledge systematically. The material covers ground I am already familiar with from practical experience, but the exam demands precision on regulatory details and framework specifics that I would not encounter in day-to-day delivery work.

I supplement the official material with primary sources: the EU AI Act text, NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and the OECD AI Principles. Understanding the source documents gives me deeper comprehension than studying summaries alone.

The Certification Landscape

The AI governance certification space is maturing rapidly. PMs who build a credential stack spanning delivery, process excellence, and AI governance will be extraordinarily well-positioned. That is exactly the stack I am building.
